DAY BY DAY.
During the past week we have drawn
attention through speThe Time cial articles and reliable is now information from the For Action, various districts to the prevalence of ragwort in the Waikato. Stress has justifiably been laid upon the fact that the weed is a serious menace to the future of dairying in the Waikato. The King Country is an adjacent area which supplies incontestable evidence of the dire results which follow through cailous indifference to the spread of this noxious- growth. The remedy rests primarily with the landholders themselves, although it is recognised that a speeding-up in official channels would materially assist the situation. The time to act is now. Within a week the seeding will be general and it will be too late then to remedy mailers. As a final warning wo trust that farmers will take cognisance of the danger signal.
The discussion by the Waikato Trotting Club's Committee, The Issue at Thursday night's of meeting, upon the layRace Tickets, ish issue of complimentary tickets to meetings in bo 111 branches of the sport opens up a question of concern not only to the clubs but to the racing public. As was pointed out by various speakers on the occasion referred to, the ticket system is very much abused. It has reached a stage where the various institutions, in their own interests, must take stock of the situation. Those who are conversant with the administrative side of racing and trotting must be forced to admit that there is a need for a straightening out in this connection. There are many of the considered opinion that it would be in the interests of racing and trotting if the complimentary ticket issue was reduced to- the absolute minimum. There is a mistaken idea that clubs subsist on their totalisalor returns. This is not so. Their principal revenue raising avenue is readied through gate receipts, as any totalisator advance lias to he returned to owners through increased stakes. The committee of the Waikato Trotting Club lias opened up discussion on a feature of administration that requires mature consideration and definite action for reduction in the interest of clubs and patrons.
