DAY BY DAY.

There will be much support for Councillor A. J- Denz in Hoardings his desire that no aro further hoarding L Unsightly. licenses be granted in the borough of Hamilton. Why should the town, which has gained an enviable reputation throughout the Dominion —and further afield —for the beauty of its environs, be disfigured by unsightly hoardings? It might be said that the fees obtained are considerable, and are spent in improving the town. Surely there is something more than a material aspect to be considered, though even materially the acceptance of fees for hoardings may defeat its own ends, for there is little doubt that Hamilton attracts outside people by reason of the reputation it has gained for the beauty of its surroundings, and anything that detracts from that beauty may mean a fewer number of visitors, with consequent less money spent. But, after all, the material aspect is of comparatively little importance; it is the aesthetic aspect that counts, yiost of the hoardings are highly coloured in contrasting shades, and are offensive to the eye. Tho members of the Beautifying Society have spent much time and money in making the town attractive; why should their efforts be nullified to some extent by the erection of unsightly hoardings? It is to be hoped that Councillor Denz will be successful in his attempt to prevent further licenses being issued.
