ANNIVERSARY DAY.
TO-MORROW’S HOLIDAY. ATTRACTIONS IN HAMILTON. REGATTA, CRICKET, BOWLING. Anniversary Day, which falls tomorrow, is usually regarded as the natural break in the daily routine between Christmas and Easter, and as such is one of the most popular holidays of the year. Marking as it docs the foundation of ■ the i Auckland Province, Anniversary Day for years has been set QS djfe,d' a y of national sport. ■ fSfr This year the Waikato is particularly well served in this respect, and if the weather holds line there should be thousands of pleasure-seekers out in the open. The primary attraction in Hamilton will 1)0 the Regatta on the river, an event which draws larger crowds every year, , and which to-morrow will be .exceptionally interesting owing to the appearance of eight-oar crews. Cricket-lovers will be found at Soddon Park, where Waikato will play a match against a team of Aucklanders, in charge of Mr E. C. Beale. Flanneled figures will occupy the greens of the various bowling clubs from morning to night. The Frankton Club has arranged an invitation tournament, and it Is likely similar fixtures will be made by other clubs. All tennis courts in the town are expected to draw considerable patronage, while‘the bathing picnic grounds at the Lake will doubtless be well occupied. Outside the town the principal event of interest will be the second and concluding day of the Takapuna Jockey Club’s summer meeting at Devonport. Local yatching enthusiasts will find much worth watching at the Regatta on tfye Waitemata at Auckland.
Nearer home, a sports meeting which has attracted entries from some of the leading athletes in the province will be held at Te Awamutu. Athletic sports will also take place,at Tauplri. Those who, at the conclusion of the day’s activities are ready for more enjoyment, will be well catered for by theatres, and dance halls, which have arranged special holiday programmes.
REGATTA DAY. SPORT AT HAMILTON. . All roads will lead to Ferry Bank to-morrow, when an acquatic carnival including .first-class ro.wing races will be . held under the auspices of the Regatta Association. The children’s events will commence at 10 a.m., and from then onwards a continual round of attractions will claim attention. Amplifiers on the boatshed will record a broadcast description of the rowing events, the transmitting apparatus being erected on a speedboat. Among the crews taking part are those representing Auckland, Tauranga, St. George’s, Wailemata, West .End, North Shore, and Hamilton. Band music, side-shows and canoe races are additional-attractions.
