three-working-days system
The British Ministry of Labour announces that the number of registered unemployed in Great Britain on November 19 was 1.364,400. This was 16,242 more than a week before and 238,146 more than a year before. The bulk of the increase is again accounted for by coal-mining in South Wales. It is further becoming apparent in Whitehall that employers throughout 'the country who cannot give full week’s employment to their men are adopting the principle of giving them three days’ work. On the remaining three the men are eligible for the dole. It is expected in London that in a few days the tinplate works in Llanelly will close down for 'three weeks by an arrangement between employers and workpeople to clear off accumulated stock.
