EXCESSIVE DRINKING.

HEAVY FINES IMPOSED. MANIAPOTO MAORI COUNCIL. (Special to Times.) OTOROHANGA, Saturday. A special sitting <sf the Maniapoto Maori Council was held in the Otorohanga Municipal Hall on Friday, when a number of natives were accused of drinking methylated spirits. Mr Peter Barton (Tauwhakarerika) presided over the court, which is a legally constituted body. The council is determined to put a stop to the drinking of methylated spirits by natives, and the following were fined for indulgence in the practice:—Hone Te Whau, fined £5; Ilira Kingi, fined £5 and £1 for being found drunk; Hone Tipene, Tini ilotcne, Wharetine, and Te Manu, fined £5 each.
