SEAMAN STABBED

QUARTERMASTER ARRESTED * TROUBLE BETWEEN CREWS. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) DUNEDIN, Thursday. Arnold Hinds, a coloured quartermaster on the steamer Bloemfontein, who was arrested in connection with the stabbing of Norman Maitland Childs, appeared in the Police Court to answer a charge of assault so •as to do bodily harm. Detective-Sergeant Nuttall asked for a remand till January 23 to call two witnesses from -the -steamer Maimoa. Mr Hanlon, -for accused,' was°allowed to call evidence for-the defence. Edwin Branch, quartermaster, stated that he saw no signs of a knife or blood about Hinds. William Robert Cherry, second officer, stated that after investigating a disturbance on deck, Hinds reported that visitors to the -ship -had beep causing trouble. Some of the Maimoa s crew were on the wharf later, and when somebody called out that a man had been stabbed he did not go down or allow any member of his crew to go, because he thought it was a ruse to start a fight between the crews. He did not see Childs being put down the gangway by Hinds. A remand was granted.
