SYDNEY’S CIVIC ‘ AFFAIRS,
COMMISSIONER’S REPORT. STAFF GREATLY REDUCED. DEFICIT OF £50,000 LIKELY. (By Telegraph—press Assn. —Copyright.) (Australian Press Association.) SYDNEY, January 17. The Sydney Civic Commissioners who supplanted the old City Council, submitted their annual report this evening. This says the council’s staff, which originally numbered 2742, had been reduced to 2000 by September. This retrenchment necessitated the payment of retiring and compassionate allowances aggregating £27,000. The full effect of the reduction in the staff would not be felt until next year.
The Commissioners estimate that there will be a deficit of about £50,000 on the year’s operations. Nearly £500,000 was spent last year on street improvements, street widening, park improvements, and slum eradication.
The only unwelcome note in the report is the prediction that charges for electricity are likely to be increased.
