ACROSS COOK STRAIT.
MISS COPPLESTONE’S ATTEMPT TO BE MADE ON SATURDAY. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) BLENHEIM, Thursday. At two o’clock on Saturday morning Lily Copplestone, the plucky Ashburton "lady swimmer, will enter the’ waters of Cook Strait from a point on the Marlborough Sounds coastline, and attempt to swim across to the North Island, a feat only once previously essayed but never accomplished by a European, though, according to a Maori legend, a native woman years ago did conquer the Straits. Miss Copplestone will leave Christchurch to-night on the ferry boat for Wellington, and will arrive there tomorrow morning. She will disembark from the Tamahine at Okukuri, near Tfc Awaite, to-morrow afternoon, and proceed ashore in a launch to Mr M. F. Kenny's home, where she will rest until an hour before the lime arrives to enter the water.
The swimmer will enter the water at % a.m. on Saturday at Cape Koamaru, which is a l'ew miles west of the Brothers’ light. The objective on the North Island will be Ohau, Poiht, near the Makara Beach. The distance from point to point in a direct line is approximately 10 miles, but owing to strong tides and currents, for which the Strait is famous;, the swimmer will have to swim an indirect course.
