CHANNEL TUNNEL.
GOVERNMENT’S ATTITUDE. EARLY STATEMENT PROBABLE, MILITARY OPPOSITION PREDICTED I ‘ / (Official Wireless.) RUGBY, Jan. 15. It is expected that when Parliament re-assembles the Government will make a statement about its attitude toward the proposed construction of a tunnel beneath the English Channel. Before Parliament adjourned, for Christmas a motion was presented by members of all parties urging the Government to assent to the project. It is not likely that the Government will be able to spare time for a discussion of the motion, but it is anticipated that its statement will be made at question time. Views on the subject are being obtained on the one hand from the Committee of Imperial Defence, and on the other hand from the Board of Trade and the Ministry of Transport. The two departments named arc preparing data as to crossChannel traffic, and the effect of the proposed tunnel on the railways, its price and similar matters. It is believed, however, that the opinion of naval and military experts will be found to he still adverse to the scheme.
