STOP PRESS NEWS

The funeral of the late Mr. William Ah Chee, general manager of the firm of Ah. Ghee and Company, took place at the Purewa Cemetery, Auckland, yesterday. Thousands gathered in the vicinity of the mortuary in Hobson St., from which the funeral moved, and hundreds of motor-cars, a number bearing members of the Chinese Nationalist Party, formed into procession there. Complaint at the heavy serge uniforms that encase them during the present excessively warm weather has been made hy one or two Hamilton policemen chatting informally to a reporter. A suggestion was made that the police should petition the Commissioner to allow them to wear the Samoan constable's uniform —a loin cloth I It is considered unlikely the suggestion will be acted upon. An old man, shabbily clad and apparently in the last stages of poverty, shuffled into the infirmary at the Auckland Hospital on Monday and asked if his eyes could be treated. He said his eyes were badly in need of treatment, but he could offer no prospect of payment. Examination showed that further medical attention was necessary, and while the old man was being put to bed the sister noticed a lump in the lining of his waistcoat. As it is customary to examine the contents of such patients’ pockets, the sister drew out the bundle, which consisted of bank-notes to the value of £l3l. In the-coat pockets were found two bankbooks, one showing a credit of over £7OO an 4 the other £2OO.
