SUPPRESSED OWN BOOK

Fearing that his pen had run away with him and that he had offended his fellow-author, 'the Countess de Noailles, M. Rene Benjamin has withdrawn from circulation the book he wrote about her.

M. Benjamin, a vigorous writer with a slinging style, is an ardent Conservative, whereas the Countess de Yoailles, despite her aristocratic origin, holds advanced political views. The two are friends, and when M. Benjamin started to write his book he told tne countess he would submit it for her approval, but at the last moment he changed his mind. “If I had shown the manuscript to Countess de Noailles,” he said, “she would have suppressed nearly all of it.”

The book had been published when a mutual friend represented to M. Rene Benjamin that the countess was terribly upset at being so severely criticised.

M. Benjamin ordered the book to be stopped, and spent a whole day visiting booksellers who had received copies and withdrew all but half-a-dozen.
