TE KUITI FATALITY.
INQUEST OPENED. MR BLACKMAN’S STATEMENT. An inquest concerning the death of Mr Avery, the victim of Monday’s fire at Te Kuiti was opened before the district coroner, Mr R. M. Somerville. Owing to his condition, Mr Blackman was unable to attend and the inquiry was adjourned after identification of the body. At the suggestion of Mr E. M. Mackersey, the solicitor who appeared for deceased’s wife, an of the blowlamp which exploded and caused the fire was made. This proved to contain kerosene, the usual fuel used in that type of lamp. Mr Blackman states that while he and deceased were working in Hie factory there was a sudden explosion and the room was speedily a veritable inferno. Mr Blackman, who himself was badly burned, attempted to get Mr Avery, whose plight was considerably worse, out of the building, but was unable to do so, and he was forced to leave the building to get outside help. This, however, was not immediately forthcoming; and when it did arrive Mr Blackman was in a state of collapse.
