MIGRANTS FROM BRITAIN

POLICY OF CABINET. ( RESTRICTIONS IVIAY CONTINUE. (Times Correspondent.) WELLINGTON, Tuesday. The extended term for the restrictions placed on the flow of assisted migration to New Zealand expired on December 31 and it is anticipated that the policy the new Government will adopt in the matter will be formulated by the Cabinet at any early date. Owing to the economic depression the 'Coates Government some 18 months ago decided that until conditions improved assisted immigrants from the United Kingdom would have to be oonllned to domestics and members of separated families, and (on several occasions the period of restriction was extended. The new Minister of Immigration is lion. J. G. Cobbe and when last the matter was brought under his notice he replied that so far lie had-not had-an opportunity of considering the position.

It is expected that when the matter comes before Cabinet the Government will decide to continue the present arrangement until the end at least of the current financial year. Negotiations are now in progress for the renewal of the existing agreement between the New Zealand and Imperial Governments governing the Empire Settlement Scheme and the expectation-is that the matter will be finalised shortly.
