THOSE LEVEL CROSSINGS
WAIPA COUNTY CONCERN. t BETTER PROTECTION URGED. “S-O-S.” - TO I GOVERNMENT. Aroused Joy the fact that three level crossing accidents —two of them fatalities —have occurred within its boundaries recently, the Waipa County Council has decided to petition the Government to take remedial steps to ensure a greater measure of safety. The question was raised by Cr. s. Saulbrey who, at the monthly meeting at Te Awamutu yesterday, stated that there had been several tragic accidents in the Waikato recently and it was obvious that the position could no longer remain as it was. A car could approach a crossing and the driver would see or hear no train until nearly on the lines. That had been the experience of a good many motorists. "We cannot allow three accidents of this nature to happen in one of our ridings,” he declared. “It may be hard on the Government to foot the bill, but the loss of life is hard on the general public as well as the motorists.” Another councillor expressed the view that the new Government might be more considerate In regard to level crossings than its predecessor. On the motion of Cr. Saulbrey, it was decided to ask the Government to take more effective steps to remove the danger from railway crossings. WARNING SIGNS ERECTED. In accordance with the new Government regulations the Waipa County Council has erected warning signs at all railway crossings in the area under its administration.
