A Peshawar message states it is strongly rumoured on the frontier that King Amanullah has abdieted in favour of his elder brother, Prince Inayatullah, and has proceeded by aeroplane to Kandahar. Official news from Kabul confirms the report that King Amanullah has agreed to the withdrawal of his reform programme. The demands of the Shlnwarls, to which the King has unconditionally agreed, mean that the Government will now be under religious control. Some of the demands are:— Priests of the Mullah class are to have supreme authority. The King is to observe all the practices and customs of the Mohammedan religion. Women, including the Queen, to adopt Afghan costume. Schoolboys to be permitted to marry. The people are to be allowed to show- respect for Holymen, by kissing their feet, and the latter’s advice is to be carried out as law, ; Jf
