WAIKATO COUNTY.
FIRST 1029 MEETING. DESIRE FOR NEW RIDING. / COUNCIL REJECTS PROPOSAL. ' The Waikato County Council met to-day, the chairman, Mr W. Newell, presiding. Also present were Crs. T. Proctor, G. Smith, T. H. Henderson, T. Hinton, J. Sampson, and Messrs A. A. Woodward (engineer) and T. B. Insoll (clerk). Communication was received from Mangatangi and Kopuku settlers urging that Maramarua be converted into a separate riding. It was stated that Whangamarino riding was unworkable.
The chairman pointed out that the valuation was too low to .warrant the constitution of a new riding. His opinion was supported by statistics supplied by the clerk. It was decided to reply that the council could not entertain the proposals on this condition. The' following resolutions were carried; —“That the council agrees efficiently to maintain in future to the satisfaction of the local representative of Public Works the remaining portion of Rutherford’s Road, to be metalled out of the Huntly district road loan, a portion of which is to be used for that purpose.” “That the council agrees efficiently to maintain the remaining portion of the Tenfoot ‘Road connecting with Tauhai Road, and also the length of Henry's Road from the junction of tho Tenfoot Road for a distance of one mile, to be metalled out of the £16,000 loan, a portion of which is to be used for that purpose.” Mr J. G. Harris asked for improvements to part of Lake Waikarc Road, Te Kauwhata. The mattfer was referred to Cr. Sampson and the en r gineer, with power to act. -Mr E. A. Sowman, of Taupirl, wrote that three-quarter miles of the road near his property had never been formed, although he paid rates. It was decided to reply that no money was available at present for the w’ork. Mr F. A. Downie (Maramarua) requested more metal on his road. The matter was referred to Cr. Sampson and the engineer. Mr G. Glass (Whangamarino) asked when the council would start forming the new road through Foster s, between the old clay road and the new deviation at Whangamarino. It was resolved to'reply that the work would proceed. , ■ / A letter from the chairman of the Highways Board agreeing with the opinion'of the council that if it is obliged to allow haulage of logs it should charge royalty in accordance with the provisions of the Public Works Act, was received. . The chairman remarked that it was unusual for the chairman of the board to agree with the county. Mr R. Watson was appointed caretaker of" the Te Kauwhata Hall. Accounts totalling £6OOO were passed for payment^
