There is still a little scarlet fever and diphtheria in the South Canterbury district. During the past four days the District Health Inspector (Mr J. Menzies) has been notified of three cases of scarlet fever in the Waimate County and one in the Timaru Borough. There has also been one case of diphtheria in Timaru. .

4, An unusual incident occurred during the steamer Kotare’s recent visit to the West Coast Sounds (says an exchange). While the vessel was berthed at Puysegur Point a peculiar looking object was noticed in the water. This proved to be the antlers of a deer which was swimming across t.he sound. The Kotare set off in pursuit, and the animal was cut oil and lassoocd. it was later killed and provided some fresh meat for the members of the party.

The Waikato has been very productive of fruit this season and much home-made jam is in process of manufacture. While Alice Blundell, aged 61, of Canning-place, Palace Gate, W., was stepping off a tramcar at the corner of Chapter Street, Vauxhall Bridge Road, S.W., she fell under an omnibus and was killed.

The owner of the fowls could hardly believe his eyes when he returned home at the dinner hour. What was in the morning a pen of healthy chloks looked like a fowl hospital, for most of the birds lay on their backs with their feet pointing skywards; and one or two, hardly strong enough to stand, staggered weakly about before subsiding again to the ground.
