DROUGHT IN AUSTRALIA
THE COUNTRY PARCHED. WAIKATO RESIDENT’S EXPERIENCE Mr P. Mourant, of Orini, writes from the s.s. Oronsay, en route to England: “ Before leaving New Zealand I heard that one of the main reasons for the good prices for New Zealand dairy produce on the London market was a drought in Australia. This reason is very ■ apparent to one who has had a look at part of that country recently. Leaving Sydney on ChrisLmas Eve and travelling to Melbourne via Albury by train was a strange experience to one who has just left the fertile Waikato. During the whole of the ride, a matter of 500 miles or more, I did not see enough green grass to keep a herd of 20 cows overnight. The place is scorched and devoid of stock feed. “ Australia would be a wonderful country if only it had a good rainfall, as there must be hundreds of thousands of acres of flat and undulating land of excellent quality, hut judging by the present summer —and I am informed it is nothing out of the common —It should not worry the New Zealand farmer as a serious competitor in the matter of dairy produce on the export market.” +
