HOUSEHOLD NOTES

STAINS ON POLISHED WOOD. Take a piece of flannel and put on it some spirits of camphor or essence of peppermint. Rub the white stain with yiis, and, after a few minutes, apply a good furniture polish. The stain will then disappear completely. Care must be taken that the camphor or peppermint has dried before the polish is applied. Otherwise, as these spirits soften the varnish, a bare place will be left, worse than the original stain. A PUDDING HINT. Does the jam invariably run out of your roly-poly puddings? If so, try this way. Before spreading the jam or treacle on the paste, sprinkle with a layer of breadcrumbs. Then spread the jam. This invariably prevents the preserve from running out during cooking. WASHING CHAMOIS GLOVES. When washing chamois gloves, rinse them well in a second water, which should be tepid and soapy, and add about a tablespoon of salad or olive oil to keep the chamois soft and pliable. For natural chamois gloves which have almost lost their colour through continued washing, use water in which orange peel has been boiled.
