CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.

MEETING AT MATAMATA. At a meeting of the Council of the Matamata Chamber of Commerce Mr B. C. Taylor presided. The secretary, Tauranga Chamber, advised that a decision as to the date of a function to celebrate the completion of the metalling of the Kaimai road had been left over "for consideration after the holidays. Mr F F Hockly forwarded copy of a letter from the late PostmasterGeneral regarding the request of the chamber for an additional telephone box in Tower Road. The authorities regretted that in view of the prospective loss in the working of an additional installation it was not possible to comply with the request. Dealing with an application from the chamber that the post office at Matamata be opened between the hours of 7 and 8 in the evening the Chief Postmaster, Hamilton, notified that the matter had been fully considered, but could not be given effect to. It was pointed out that certain other towns with more business did not open, and also that the fact of Matamata having a continuous telephone service was of considerable assistance to subscribers and the public. The chairman suggested that further application be made for the post office to be open between 7 and 8 on the weekly late night only, and it was agreed to make an application on these lines.

The Director, Live Stock Division, wrote that representations to the Railway Department for a reduction in the freight on whale oil had not met with favourable consideration. —It was resolved to take the matter up again with the present Government, the president and secretary to draft a letter. A letter from the Department of Agriculture explained the reason it was not considered necessary to open a branch of the registration of brands office at Matamata. Registration could be carried out by. post, without visiting Hamilton, and any advice could be obtained from the local stock inspector. After discussion the chamber decided to recommend to the business people that the holidays be Tuesday and Wednesday in each week for Christmas and New Year, late night in each of these weeks to- be Monday night.
