GALA AT THE LAKE.

TENNIS QUEEN CARNIVAL. LARGE ATTENDANCE OF PUBLIC. -ASSOCIATION'S FUNDS BENEFIT. In order to secure funds to procure courts on which to play their competition'matches the Hamilton Suburban Lawn Tennis Association organised a gala, which was held at the Lake on Saturday afternoon. Ideal weather conditions during the earlier part of the afternoon attracted a large attendance of the public, and the various stalls and side-shows arranged around the grounds reaped a rich harvest, so that the funds of the association should benefit considerably. . During the latter part of the afternoon, however, a ,heavy rainstorm •drenched most of the crowd and many went. home. The following were responsible lor the various stalls and side-shows: — . drinks and ice-cream, Mesdames Bate■man and Oxenham (Frankton; produce, Mesdames Munro, W'ealherley, Hirst, and Miss Olsen (Ruakura and Power Board); afternoon tea, Mrs Cully and Miss Mavis Jones (St. Paul's and Hamilton East Presbyterian); cakes, Mrs Mead and Miss McMiken (Fairfield and St. Peter's); sideshows, Messrs Fisher, Cooper, Pye and Darrow (2) (St. Pater's and Fairfield); drinks, Mrs Scott (Railway). The judges for the athletic events were Messrs Cliffe, Cully, Brown and Cates. During the afternoon a programme of athletic events attracted many entries from the younger generation, and some exciting finishes were seen. Following are the results of the events: — 100 Yards, boys under 12.—D.Patterson 1, H. Martin 2, B. McKei.zie 3. 100 Yards, boys over 12. —H. Kappley 1, C. Goosman 2, A. Malins 3. 75 Yards, girls under 12.—E. Main 1, P. Prince 2,'E. Cave 3. 75 Yards, girls over 12.—A. Walsh 1, A. Bell and D. Crowley (dead heat). Senior Relay Race, boys.—Fairfield 1. Forest Lake 2, Frankton 3. Junior Relay Race, boys.—Fairfield 1,. Frankton 2, ,Whitiora and Forest Lake (dead heat) 3. Senior Relay Race, girls.—Fairfield 1, Frankton 2. Junior Relay Race, 1, Forest Lake 2, Frankton 3. Slow Bicycle Race,, boys.—L. Hill 1, E. Collins 2.

Proud mothers had an opportunity of exhibiting their offspring in a baby show, which attracted a large number of entries. The judge had a difficult job to decide the winner, and finally declared Mrs Wilmshurst's girl, aged 5£ months, the winner of the section for babies under the age of six months, while Mrs King's boy, ajed 11 months, secured first place in tee division open to those under 12 months.

Those responsible for the organisation of the gala are to be congratulated on the succe-s of their efforts, and in the near fu'ure they will no doubt see the object of their endeavour an accomplished fact. • Apart from the gala a queen carnival is now in progress, and there is considerable competition among lue various clubs in support of their respective representatives.
