HIGH SCHOOL HOSTEL.
GRANT FOR BUILDING. HOME FOR COUNTRY PUPILS. Speaking at the breaking-up ceremony at the Hamilton High School this afternoon the headmaster, Mr E. Wilson, said that "Abbotsford," the school house for country girls had 27 girls in residence. The house was on the small sale, and it would probably be necessary to provide additional accommodation in the coming year. "Abbotsford," continued the headmaster, was excellently conducted, and he had no hesitation in recommending it to parents who wished their daughters to be carefully supervised and cared for whilst they were at the school.
The speaker continued that he had felt long ago that their most urgent need was a boarding-house for country boys who wished to obtain secondary education in Hamilton. As the result of a vigorous campaign this year the Department had at last approved of a grant for a boys' hostel, and this he hoped to sec established during the coming year. The board bad decided to build the hostel near the school, on the block given for (he purpose some 15 years ago by the Domain Board. The site is an ideal one. With the establishment of the hostel the usefulness and influence of the school would be immeasurably extended. As a residential school the High School would become what they had always wished it to be a school not for Hamilton only, but for the whole of Waikato.
