OBITUARY.
MRS ARTHUR WHITEHORN.
THE LATE MRS WHITEHORPJ. The death occurred at her residence, River Road, Hamilton, last night, of May Lilian Whitehorn, late principal and proprietress of "Sonning" Girls' School. The late Mrs Whitehorn was a daughter of Mr James Caffin, of Dunedin, and was born in Melbourne. The family .removed to New Zealand when Mrs Whitehorn was quite young, and lived mostly in Dunedin, where she received her education. About 21 years ago she came to Hamilton, where, she started a girls' school. The pupils during the first year numbered not more than half a dozen. The school was, however, the first of its kind in Waikato and as years progressed its popularity grew, until Mrs Whitehorn was forced to take more commodious premises. * She finally acquired the propertv now known as "Sonning, which was a Whitehorn family name, and gradually built Up a school which attracted pupils from a.'l parts of the province, and is now the present Diocesan School. About three years ago she retired. Six weeks ago Mrs Whitehorn was taken seriously ill, and she died as staled, last night. The late Mrs Whitehorn won and retained the affection of all her pupils, large numbers of whom came under her care during the time she was encased in educational work, and she was held in the highest esteem by all with whom she came in contact. The deceased leaves a widower and one daughter (Mrs David Williams), lor whom much sympathy will he felt. Dp. J. J. BROWNLEE. (By Telegraph-t'rese *.isoolnllon.l Christchurch, Monday.
