STORMY WEATHER.
COLD AND WINTRY. SNOW FIGHT DOWN LINE. Under the impression that the mantle of winter had been thrown off weeks ago, Hamiltonions were surprised when they ventured out into the biting wind and rains of the w’eek-end. September was expected to have an increased rainfall, but the big drop in temperature and the cold winds somewhat dampened the optimistic forecasts that spring weather had set in. A Hamilton resident who travelled from Wellington on the express last night, informed a reporter to-day that over four inches of snow were registered on the Waimarino Plains. At one of the stations at which the train stopped the passengers were so delighted! that they left the carriages and bombarded each other with snowballs. Snow was falling steadily all the time. Such tan unusual depth of snow proves that a particularly cold snap has been sweeping the North Island. According to our informant there was no snow at Ohakune, but right up the line the atmosphere was intensely cold. Farmers in the Waikato And the weather rather disconcerting. Lambing is still proceeding and the climatic conditions of the week-end have been exceedingly trying. DAMAGE AT WANGANUI. WANGANUI, Sunday. Unsettled weather yesterday, morning turned to a storm in the a'ftcrnoon. Daylight to-day showed flattened fences and signboards, while low-ly-ing areas in the country were covered with water. Uprooted trees lay here and there. It is stated that the lambs on upcountry properties have, in some cases, fared badly. The storm wrought havoc with telephone and telegraph wires. An official of the department stated today that about 40 or 50 circuits were affected in the Wanganui district alone. _____________
