OBSCENE LANGUAGE.
A NATIVE FINED. INCIDENT AT MORRINSVILLE. At the Police Court, Morrinsville, before, Messrs C. M. Cummer and J. B. Thomas, J.’sP., Walter Watana was charged with using obscene language in a public place, also with assault. ■Constable lleeps said that on Saturday evening he was coming out of; the Nottingham Castle Hotel, when lie | heard the accused using the language ; complained of, at the same time strik- | ing with his fists a man whose name j was not known. There were several j natives about at the time, some of j whom had been drinking, and if the j police had not been about there would i probably have been a very serious j disturbance. He arrested accused, ! handcuffed him and locked him up. j The: accused had been sent to the* Burnham Industrial School as a boy, | and there were several oilier convic- j lions against him, and but for the fact that lie was a married man and his wife in a critical state of health he would press for a heavy penalty, as ttie offences were of a serious nature. Accused was convicted and fined [ £5, or three months’ imprisonment, j on’the first charge, and convicted and discharged on the second.
