TE AWAMUTU BOROUGH.

MEETING OF COUNCIL. The fortnightly meeting of the Te Awarnutu Borough Council was held on Monday evening, when the DeputyMayor (Cr. G. Spinley) presided, and there were also present:—Crs. G. Cifford, J. Marshall, W. J. N.orth, J. C. MontcfTore, C. A. Reilly, C. Bygrave, and W. Swain. The town clerk (Mr D. Bockett) and the engineer (Mr W. D. R. McCurdie) were also present. Reporting on the application from the Te AwamutU Dairy Company for a better water supply the engineer stated there were two alternatives — either to All the gap of 19 chains between the -iin pipe line going to the septic tank, and the Gin main in Alexandra Street by the railway line, at a cost of £314 for 6in pipes, or £237 for 4in pipes, or by laying three chains of 4in pipes from Alexandra Street at a cost of about £3B. The Works Committee recommended the gap of 19 chains be laid with 6in pipes. This was agreed to, subject to tenders being called for the work after the Dairy Company had been connected. Dealing with the position of a landing stage for cattle, etc., at the sale yards the engineer recommended that such a landing stage and camp be erected at a cost of £ls in the sale yards.—This was agreed to by the Council.

The district engineer bad advised the borough engineer that Puniu Road, from Te Awamutu to Barton's corner, Te Kawa, had been declared a secondary highway on April 5. Cr. Gifford asked how the Alexandra Street allocation stood? It seemed to him that it had already been exceeded by £2OO, and the work apparently was not yet completed. The town clerk said it certainly had been overspent. Cr. Gifford said apparently other streets had suffered for the benefit of Alexandra Street. Cr. Monteflore said it was very hard to keep every work strictly to its allocation. The Chamber of Commerce wrote drawing attention to the fact that there were no direction notices relating to the ladies' rest room, and asking the Council to have some put up, so that the locality of the room might be more generally known. —It was decided that signs be erected, the location to be decided by the Works Committee.

The. chairman brought up the question of a special meeting to deal with the estimates. lie though it would save time at the ordinary meeting.— It was resolved that a special mecLing be held next Thursday. The chairman also brought up the question of entertaining the Auckland business men on their visit, in conjunction with the Chamber of Commerce. They would apjJiu-cniJy be at Te Awamutu about an hour, and it was proposed to entertain them to a luncheon, when it was hoped Mr A. G Lunn. of Auckland, would address the meeting.—-It was decided that the Council assist the Chamber financially in the cost of the proposed entertainment. , It was resolved that kerbing be laid from Rickitt's corner up to Mr Reilly's motor shed —about 5 chains, and kerbing be laid from the War Memorial up to the Park gate. The engineer is to prepare plans and specifications for the sealing and kerbing work required. It was decided by the DeputyMayor and seconded by the chairman, that the Waipa County Council be asked to assist in having Brcn. Martyn's Road declared a stock road with a view to keeping stock off the main Te Awamutu-Kihikihi Road. Referring' to this road, Cr. Monteflore said there was one corner in the main Kihikihi Road that was dangerous enough now, and he thought that this road should have the cattle kept off it. He moved that the Deputy-Mayor and Crs. Bygrave, and the mover wait on the County Council to have this road declared a stock route.
