"THE FASTEST HUMAN."

CHARLEY PADDOCK. A LENGTHY RECORD. Youth will be served in most quarters, but in Charley's Paddock's case he serves himself. -Not that the socalled "fastest human" is a doddering old man, but lie is far from being a schoolboy any more, and yet he is still the greatest runner in the United States, if not in the world, at present. Paddock is one of the few great sprinters that have lasted more than live years. He has been competing now for nearly 15 years, and he still has no peer. This seems quite remarkable to me (writes "Snowy" Baker in the Sydney Heferce), as the hectic competition that he has been through seems to have made him belter instead of taking anything out of him. Paddock is pointing for his third Olympic team at the present time. He faces his leading rivals in a pre-Olympic try-out at Los Angeles on the 16th of this mouth. Charley Borah, of the University of Southern California, the boy who chased Paddock to his 100 yard record three years ago, is to face Paddock in the try-outs. Two schoolboy •sprinters who with their speed astounded high school and college sprint circles during the past year, are entered in the event. They are Frank Lombardi, of Los Angeles, and Frank Wykol'f, of Glendale, a town near Los Angeles.

1B Years of Competition. Paddock Is being picked toy all the experts to triumph in the race. They also figure that Charley is a sure bet for the Olympics. Mind you, this is after almost 15 years of competition. His rivals are all in their teens, with the exception of Borah, who has just turned into his twenties. Paddock has always .been in the limelight in some way or other since he entered athletics. The sprinter has colour that gets him over where others would fail. For instance, he won himself reams of first page publicity with his tilts with amateur athletic olllcials. Several times they tried to make a professional out or him, but he has always beaten them. •U one time lie was reported to be engaged io Bebc Daniels, motion picture actress, but alter it had made the rounds and was no longer a news item both Charley and Bebe denied that Uicv were engaged. Paddock also is a first hand at lecture lours. Be hops all around the country here giving lectures on most everything. In some quarters they claim that he simply uses his athletic ability to get the people to Ins lectures Nevertheless, he is still doing it and he is still a lilywhite amateur under American rules. It will be interesting if Paddock again leads the American sprinters abroad, as he wi certainly make the athletic world sit up and take notice of him when he gets to the Olympic Games.
