NEW ZEALAND RAILWAYS.
IMPROVEMENT in results. WORKING PROFIT £54,193. WELLINGTON, Thursday. A general improvement in the financial results of railway operations is shown by the department’s working account for the four weeks ended June 23. The working profit is £54,193 as against £44,079 in the corresponding period last year. Following is a summary of the returns from railway operating in the North and the South Island and from the whole service altogether with the increases over the corresponding figures for the June period last year:—
The net revenue from miscellaneous sources, included in the grand total, was £16,101, an increase of £lB4 7. For the period of 84 days to June 23, working profits have totalled £279,075 as against £335,085 (86 days) last year-and £419,130 (88 days) in 1926. 'Phis year’s total comprises £148,215 from the North Island railways, a decrease of £44,664; £73,105 from the South Island railways, a decrease of £15,879 and £58,295 from miscellaneous revenue, an increase of £5133, Tho net revenue for the 12 weeks is £55,410 less than that for the corresponding period last year.
