During the war lie offered to use the whole of his jute mills for making sandbags for the trenches. Sir David lived a secluded life both in Calcutta and in Loudon. He was a generous benefactor, iris gifts sometimes amounting in single donations io £50,000. They were, however, invariably made anonymously.
