THE BISHOP’S PRAISE.
STANDING COMMITTEE. GREAT WORK ACHIEVED. T' THROUGH DIFFICULT PERIOD. A warm tribute to the work of the Standing Committee was paid by Bishop Cherrington, addressing members of the Diocesan Synod last evening. His Lordship said practically the same Standing Committee which was in office last year had been elected. No one could be more grateful to that committee than himself. (Applause.) Under the most difficult and trying circumstances the committee had not scrupled to give him of its best, in ability, loyal support and time. (Applause.) Synod did not realise the enormous amount of time devoted to church work by the committee. It was customary in some dioceses to transact business in a couple of hours. “Sometimes the committee has taken a whole day to deal with matters affecting this new and difficult diocese, ’ he continued. “It cannot he said the Standing Committee has not taken pains to place the diocese on a satisfactory basis. In the minds of some people I may be wrong. As far as lam consciously concerned I have tried to identify myself with the Standing Committee of this diocese. “I still maintain what I have supposed lam right in saying.” (Applause.) The Bishop regretted some of the Standing Committee had not gained re-election, hut he welcomed both clerical and lay members, especially one who had shared with him a considerable amount of danger and experiences in the Great War. “I hope you will stand together and work together, shoulder to shoulder, for the achievement of success in the months to come.” (Loud applause.)
