At Albany Mrs Knapp was convicted in the first degree for larceny of State census funds to-day. The maximum penalty is ten years’ imprisonment. , The imposition of the sentence will probably occur next week. A message from Albany, New York State, in January stated that the most serious charges of malfeasance in office to be made against a woman since power to. hold office has been granted to women in America, had been lodged against Mrs Florence Knapp, dean of the college of home economics of Syracuse University, and former secretary to the State of New York. The commissioner who investigated the charges alleged she illegally disbursed £23,600 and wasted nearly £16,000 in her administration of the census funds. The charges included nepotism (favouring relatives) and the giving away of State funds, which ultimately were traced back as having been in her pos« session.
