RACING IN THE SOUTH

Saturday was a lean period for racing enthusiasts. The only fixture carried out on that day was the Amberley Club’s. .meeting, but the fields engaged at this Canterbury fixture were not strong either In numbers or quality. The principal event of the card was the Starkey Memorial Handicap in which Rotor soored easily from Moratorium and Amor, with Battle Colours and Thorndale among the beaten division. Zaragoza was first home in the Amberley Handicap from Gold Mint and Sprinkler. An item of interest to this part of the Dominion was the success of Helsler, who was formerly located in Hamilton, in the batten event of the proI gramme.

Royal Land moved up at the ome turn, but Heisler led to the .raight, beating Oriflamb easily by vo lengths. Royal Land was two ngths away, with Rangiavvhao a oderate fourth, and Tarleton last. Waihemo won well, hut Solfello ran a good race, after getting off badly. A Close Finish. Gold Mint just headed Zaragoza in favouritism in the Amberley Handicap. Except 'that Gold Mint was a trifle slow, the field raced in line for a hundred’yards, when Sagittarius went on from Polydcctes. At the home turn Zaragoza was third, and she led to the straight and stalled off Gold Mint by a head. Sprinkler moved up at the home turn and finished two lengths . away, with Sagittarius fourth. Another Favourite Home. Malmsey was a pronounced favourite for the Glasnevin Hack. Amor and Atone led Solfello for half a mile, when the three went on together. Malmsey, decisively by a length from Amor, with Atone two lengths away, and Lancer close up. Malmsey stayed much too well for the others. The Concluding Item. In a field of eighteen for the Teviotdale Trot the Ilalswell ParkMoneymore bracket was favourite. Moneymore, Lightfoot and Liberty Hall assisted in the early pace-mak-ing, but over the last half-mile only Lightfoot and Danny Boy had a chance. The latter .won by two lengths. Harry Locanda was six lengths away, and Moneymore fourth. The Wanganui Jockey Club’s committee decided yesterday to abandon the idea of having a one-day meeting in the spring and a one-day fixture in January, and will apply for two days in September as usual.
