“FATHER OF UNION.”

CAPTAIN COLBECK RETIRES. THIRTY YEARS’ WORK. It was only after strong remonstrances that Captain F. Colbeck (Morrinsville) was allowed to retire from the executive of the Union at the Provincial Conference of the Farmers’ Union to-day.

Captain Colbeck has been on the executive of the Auckland Union on and off for the past 30 years, and lias earned the title of “Father of the Union.” lie was one of the first to inaugurate the movement with Mr A. C. Glass in 1899, and was the first vice-presi-dent of the institution. Although he explained he would still be actively interested in the work of the Union, he thought it better to resign from the executive in favour of younger men. Glowing tributes were paid to Captain Colbeck’s untiring efforts in the farmers’ interests over so long a period, and the resignation was accepted with regret.
