RUGBY FOOTBALL.

WAIPA UNION. MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE MEETS. The usual meeting of the Management Committee of the Waipa Rugby Union was held last night, the president (Mr F. Quin) presiding. There were also present Messrs G. Jeffs, G. B. Melrose, J. Williams, U. Reynolds, W. Whitton, H. Mabbett, G. W. Mairs, H. T. Haselden, and L. 0. Morgan (secretary). / Putaruru Rugby Union wrote regretting their inability to accept Waipa’s invitation for May 26, but suggesting June 16. —Accepted. Eden Club wrote suggesting June 2 for a visit of Waipa’s Junior reps, to Auckland to play that club’s first Junior team. It was decided to reply that the date was unsuitable, and the matter was left in the hands of Mr Haselden to arrange. Mr P. J. D-oyle wrote tendering his resignation from the Union on account of his transfer to Auckland. The resignation was accepted with regret, and a letter is to be sent to Mr Doyle thanking him for his valuable support and help. Mr A. W. Gallagher, referee of the Te Awamutu v. Korakonui Junior B match, reported that he had ordered a Te Awamutu player, H. Quinlan, off the field for answering back. Mr Gallagher reported further that he realised afterwards that the player was not speaking to the referee, but to one of his team mates.—lt was decided that no further action be taken. Mr Melrose was deputed to interview Mr H. Brown in regard to coaching the rep. team. Huimai Club notified their intention of withdrawing from the senior competition. It was unanimously decided to extend the senior competition to three rounds. Three Huimai senior players came before the committee applying for regrading to Junior status. The application of Moses (list 71b) and Hauhunopo (13st 21b) were deferred for a week. C. Marshall was regraded and transferred to Korakonui B. Mr Jeffs reported that during the Mangahoe-Rovers Junior match on No. 2 ground, spectators had encroached on the ground. He had several complaints from spectators who did not offend. —It was decided to revert to the system of appointing ground stewards for each Saturday and Messrs Haselden and Mabbett were appointed for next Saturday. Mr Morgan intimated that pressure of other duties necessitated his giving up the secretaryship. The union deferred, the matter until next week. Arrangements were made for a charge day at headquarters on Satui - day next. MATAMATA SUB-UNION. At the weekly meeting, Mr J. E. Cummings presided. The secretary of the Waikato Union forwarded a donation of £2 10s to be used for the encouragement of school Rugby football. —It was resolved that the money be used for purchasing footballs for the Wardville, Waharoa, Selwyn, Hinuera and Waiomo schools. A cheque for one guinea towards the sub-union’s funds was received from Mr N. L. Higginson, Okoroire. — Received with thanks.' The secretary of the Walton Club wrote requesting that the Management Committee re-open the case of their player, Moore, who was disqualified for the season for offences on the field. —The appeal was not granted, and the secretary was directed to refund the amount of 10/- forwarded with the appeal. The chairman said that the Walton Club could now appeal through the sub-union to the Waikato Union if it so desired. The case of Abraham, a Walton player, ordered off on Saturday last, was considered, and after hearing both the referee and the player, it was decided by five votes to three that the player be suspended for two playing Saturdays.

Regarding a complaint by an onlooker at Hinuera, after hearing the referee’s explanation it was decided to lake no further action. A Maori player named Tai (Rangauiti Club) was suspended for four playing Saturdays for striking an opponent. Saturday Fixtures. Games for Saturday are as follows: Seniors: Patetere v. Walton at Matamata; Wairere v. Hinuera at Okauia; Rangauiti v. Matamata at Matamata. Juniors: Patetere v. Walton at Matamata; Wardville v. Hinuera at Matamata; Waharoa v. Matamata at Matamata. Thirds: Matamata v. Wardville at Matamata; Patetere v. High School at Tirau. * RANFURLY SHIELD. FOUR CHALLENGES RECEIVED. CHRISTCHURCH, Wednesday. At a meeting of the Canterbury. Rugby Union a challenge was received from Hawke’s Bay for the Ranfurly Shield. The challenging union intimated that it fully realised Canterbury’s difficulty regarding fixtures but suggested September 12 as the date for the match in Christchurch, conditional on Canterbury’s holding the Shield on that date. Mr S. F. Wilson said, “ I move that we accept the challenge and pray we will be able to play it.” The motion was carried. Other challenges accepted were from Wairarapa, for July 18, and from Manawhenua, for August 11. The chairman pointed out that South Canterbury had put in the first claim for a challenge match. It was decided to write to that union pointing out that it would be very hard for Canterbury to fix a date prior to July 18.
