WAIKATO COUNTY.

MEETING OF COUNCIL. GENERAL BUSINESS DEALTH WITH. The monthly meeting of the Waikato County Council on Wednesday was attended by Crs. W. Newell (chairman), T. Hinton, S. C. G. Lye, T. 11. Henderson, T. Proctor and G. Smith. The engineer (Mr A. Woodward) and county clerk (Mr T. B. Insoli) were also in attendance. In accordance with notice Cr. Lye moved that the Highways Board be recommended to re-classify the MatangiTauwhare and Matangi-Hinton’s Gully roads in the Tamahere riding to permit of four tons laden weight being carried thereon, instead of 2 J Lons.—Carried. With the exception of the rate for the Tamahere riding, in which the lid proposed was reduced to IJd (referred to elsewhere) the rates levied for the various ridings were confirmed as under: Whangamarino lid, Huntly lid, Taupiri, Rototuna and Ruakura Cambridge Id; Hopu Hopu Drainage District, A lands 3-16 d, B l-8d; Pukeroro Drainage District, A 2d, B lid, C id. It was resolved to pay 10 per cent, towards cost of cleaning the Woodlands drain in connection with damage done by recent fires. Mr W. J. Henry, Mercer, requested payment of £5 for legal expenses, to include the cost of two swing-gates to be erected across a road for which the land had been given.—Agreed to.

The Newstead branch of New Zealand Farmers’ Union sought financial assistance to obviate the proposed closing of the Newstead Post-office. —Resolved that the riding will he responsible for £3, if required, to keep the office* open.

The Hospital Board notified a levy of £4646 0s 8d upon the county valuation of £5,290,845.—Received.

Mr T. B. Austing, Newstead, wrote enclosing an account for £8 10s for work for two years on road and drains. —Held over until next meeting to permit of further inquiries. Mf A. M. Feist asked that the road to A. C. Feist’s property at Kopuku he connected with the main road, a bridge over the stream being required to effect this.

The engineer stated that a bridge 100 ft long would he necessary, and it was decided to inform the writer that the Council had no money available. It was resolved to forward for tiie coming Counties’ Conference remits ad-J vocating the abolition of differential rates on the railway for road metal or shingle, and that, all highways should he nationalised.

Mr C. . V. Turpin wrote resigning position' of general foreman, Tamahere riding.—Referred to engineer with a view to retaining Mr Turpin’s services temporarily. Mr E. S. McDonald complained of the overgrown state of the pathways in llowden Street.—Referred to engineer.

Mr G. Cozens, Te Kauwhata, wrote requesting permission for a party of ten settlers to erect private telephone poles on part of Okeria-Taniwha and Tanhvha-Te Kauwhata roads.—Permission granted.

The Hillside Drainage Board invited the council to participate in a conference to appoint a delegation to wait on the Prime Minister regarding a subsidy towards Komakorau Greek improvement.—Chairman and engineer to attend.

The Rural Counties Association notified that a conference of representatives of affiliated counties would he held at Hamilton on June 2l‘ to discuss various mutters, including petrol lax, amalgamation of counties, and limber levy.—Chairman, (Jr. Henderson, engineer and clerk to attend. Increases to staff salaries, as recommended by the committee and aggregating £147, were agreed to as from May J..
