GAMING CHARGES.

ARREST AT AUCKLAND. AUCKLAND, Monday. Police Officers arrested Philip George Hugh Mulligan on warrant on Saturday on a charge of keeping rooms in National Chambers as a common aming-house. MULLIGAN FINED £6O. a big Business. (By Telegraph.—Special to Times.) AUCKLAND, Monday. The magistrate, Mr W. R. McKean, this morning fined Philip George Hugh Mulligan £6O, in default one month’s imprisonment., on a charge of using premises in the National Chambers in Swanson Street as a common gaming house. Senior-Sergeant McCarthy said the premises were equipped with a telephone and complete betting outfit. The books showed that the business ran into big figures. In some cases there were double bets of 200 to 1 and 300 to 1, there being a half-page of In the Shade bets alone. Mahomed Amed Sunni, professional wrestler, who was charged with being found on the premises, explained that Mulligan was assisting him regarding a proposed match in Australia, and he went to the premises to collect correspondence. The charge against Sunni was dismissed. Counsel for Mulligan did not agree with the police statement that the business was a big one, and observed that the detectives in the Court could say that there were seven or eight bigger bookmakers doirig business in Auckland. In giving judgment Mr McKean said he had taken into consideration the fact that Mulligan had pleaded guilty.
