NEW MENACE OF AIR.
MORE EFFECTIVE SMOKE-SCREEN! UNSEEN BOMBERS. One of the most fascinating of al researches, that of the formation o huge aerial smoke screens by specially equipped aeroplanes, is describ ed and illustrated in the March issue of “Air,” the organ of the Air League of the British Empire. Jl says: “Suol screens can lie formed both vertical!; and horizontally on an immense scale By their means aircraft can now blim surface craft and then attack then with bombs or torpedoes from pointblank range. The only effective defence is by means of aircraft.” In a recent demonstration the effect was weiird. Out at sea was heard th( drone of aero-engines. Then suddenly, the clearness of the sky became dimmed by what looked like a gathering mist. Thicker it grew. Then i began to roll in ominously towards the land, blotting out all sight of everything in its progress. Implacably it drifted in, and all those who became involved in it were groping about as though in one of the densest fogs. Means for creating such gigantie smoke-palls have now reached a stage vastly in advance of anything possible during the war.
