TRAIN STOPS ITSELF.
NEW AUTOMATIC CONTROL. SAFETY IF DRIVER FAILS. Automatic control of its trains over a distance of 500 miles will be installed shortly by the Chicago and North-Western Railway. This will be the longest stretch of automatic control in the world. By the new system trains are stopped at danger signals independently of the engine driver should he fail to see a warning or become suddenly disabled.
Electricity flowing down one rail and up the other supplies the power operating the new r invention. Current is picked up by coils on the engine apd when the train is in the next block these roils receive danger signals. The blowing of a whistle is the warning to stop. if the driver fails to stop the train automatically reduces its speed to 20 miles an hour. Another blast of a different note is the second warning. If this is disregarded the train sto»s automatically.
