LORD HAIG’S WILL.
HIS WAR DIARIES. The will of the late Field-Marshall Earl Haig, dated March 11, 1920, contains the following reference to his war diaries: — . “In respect that I have written certain diaries in connection with the recent Great War. 1 hereby authorise m> trustees to publish Ihc same and any other writings or papers which 1 may leave, and that at such time or times and on such terms and conditions as they in their uncontrolled discretion may think (11, and until such publication the said diaries and other writings and papers shall remain in the custody of my wife.” It has already been announced, however. that Lord Haig deposited his diaries, sealed, in the British Museum in 1920, directing that the packet should not be opened until 1940. An official of Ihc British Museum informed a reporter that the documents in the possession of the museum were handed to them in the early part of 192'0, either at the end of January or the beginning of February of that year.
The trustees are Countess Haig, Col.-Commandant B. D. Fisher Cavalry Brigade, Tidworth; and Major (now 1 Major-General, in command of the Royal Military Academy, Woolwich) 11. D. de Prce. In a codicil dated Sptember 19, 1920, Lord Haig wrote: “It is my especial wish that I should be buried in the parish in which Bemersyde is situated.” . . Lord Haig left to Lady ITaig such portion of the means and estate, and .settlements, as will bring her income up to £3OOO a year free of tax; his household furniture; and his decorations, swords of honour, and so forth, for her lifetime, passing then to the bolder of the title.
To his brother, John Alicius Haig, he left an annuity of £4OO. Ml the heritable property he left to his son, the new earl (who is nine vears old), on attaining the age of 21, directing his trustees to hold the residue for the behoof of his children. Lord Haig had three daughters as well as his soa.
