LACK OF PUBLIC SPIRIT.

(To the Editor.'} Sir, —On reading my Times on Tuesday I was interested to learn that Strafford was celebrating its jubilee and that it was to last a full week. What a boon that will be for the business community. Everyone seemed to be taking part and enjoying the gaiety, to say nothing of the older members of the district who, I suppose, were renewing old friendships. Now, Hamilton, with its- population according to statistics of 10,070, could not do likewise, and as a nine-year-old resident I should like to enquire how that is? Why is it that so many societies flourish for awhile and then die a natural death? Wasn’t it possible to get the whole town interested in its jubilee, or is it that we have only one or two people public-spirited enough to have all the financial undertakings of the town thrust on their shoulders? If you cannot get Hie business people to combine for a carnival to celebrate the town's 50th anniversary, why not have got. the working classes together? It is a disgrace I tint little Stratford could put for 11 1 such a celebration and our town’s jubilee be practically ignored. Several times, as one interested in the town’s welfare, I have wondered why this should he. Isn't it time we began to broaden our minds and gol together for the town’s welfare? All the business people will toll you “trade is something awful.” Then why have lost a glorious opportunity, such as the jubilee, when we could have had a royal time at very little cost and Ihe exchequers of many a Hamilton business house been replenished. I think we depend too much on our Winter Show. Why not make the town a

“Winter Show” at every possible opportunity? I am sure everyone enjoyed the recent Ferry Bank carnival, especially the younger generation. Hoping something may he done to put our town on a more prosperous basis than exists at present.—T am. etc.. SOCIAL WELFARE.
