TRADE WITH CANADA.
DEBATE IN PARLIAMENT. UNFAIR COMPETITION. CANADIAN FARMERS’ HANDICAP. (A. P. Assn, and Sun.) OTTAWA, Feb. 8. An attack was made on the trade treaty between Canada and Australia by Mr George T. McNutt, Conservative member for Colchester. He claimed that the dumping of Australian and New Zealand butter in Canada was driving the dairy farmers out of business.
Mr J. E. Sinclair, Liberal, said he doubted whether butter prices had dropped. If Canada was to be a nation within the Empire how could she consider repudiating the treaty. The surplus dairy products of Canada found a market in Britain which controlled the price of butter. Canada was quite able to compete on the British market with the Antipodes. Dr. F. S. Tolmie (Conservative) stated that under the treaty Canadian butter manufacturers received unfair treatment. Canadian farmers had to store provender for winter feed for their cows. They could not compete with the Antipodes, where cattle were turned out to grass. If there were no market in Canada for Canadian butter he feared the farmers would move to the United tSates.
