THEFT OF THREE RINGS.
BARRISTER PLEADS GUILTY. A DISTINGUISHED CAREER. AUCKLAND, Tuesday. Said to be a barrister of the Middle Temple, a Doctor of Philosophy, a fluent speaker of five languages, and a soldier with a remarkable service record who had once been engaged on the Inter-Allied Commission, Roy Chatterjee, aged 34, pleaded guilty in the Police Court yesterday to stealing three rings belonging to William Goodsell, antique* dealer, who valued them at £35.
It was stated that about four, months ago accused called on Mr Goodsell, and after conversation was alfowed to take three rings away with the idea of selling them. He had never returned with the articles, which he pawned. One was still missing. Mr Adams said accused was married and had one child. He was brilliant as a scholar and student. At present he was sales manager for a Arm-and was-drawing £lO a week. Mr W. IL McKean, S.M., remanded accused to appear to-day for sentence. REPUTATION UNSATISFACTORY. A FINE INFLICTED. PALMERSTON N., Tuesday. When Roy Chatterjee, aged 34, an Indian Doctor of Philosophy, was presented at Court to-day for sentence on a charge of stealing three rings, \aluocl at £35, he was unable to tell the magistrate anything about one ring, which had not been recovered. Chatterjee had obtained the rings to sell, but did not return them and pawned one.. The police said his character and reputation was unsatisfactory.. As soon as accused knew the police were lobking for him ho left, for the South, and was arrested at Palmerston North. He tied previous convictions for theft. The magistrate remarked that there had been a good deal of carelessness on the part of the dealer from whom the prisoner obtained the ring, and he fined Chatterjee £ls, ordering him to pay £25 for one ring and 45/- to the pawnbroker, in default six months imprisonment, ,■
