NOTES ON THE RUNNING.

OUTSIDER SCORES IN HURDLES. For the Spring Hurdles Santiago was scratched and the former Cambridgeowned candidate, Abcrfeldy, was a pronounced favourite from Dubious, with Kaikabu and Koauau next in demand. Abcrfeldy gave trouble at the barrier. Approaching the first jump Bachelor Gay had the lead, and increased it to 10 lengths. Jumping beautifully, he was six lengths clear passing the stand, at which point he was followed by Kaikahu, Dubious, and Beauty Light, with Koauau improving his position quickly, while Tarleton was also going up. All were jumping well. Aberfcldy was well back, but making a forward move. Bachelor Gay bowled along freely in front of Dubious and Koauau, with Tarleton dropping back. Kaikahu set out after Bachelor Gay, with Dubious, Koauau and Beauty Light following in that order. Six furlongs from home Bachelor Gay appeared to break down, and was pulled up while still in front. Kaikahu now led the field, but Beauty Bight made a run' and ranged up alongside the pilot. They were together crossing the top from Dubious and Koauau. At the last jump Beauty Bight looked like a winner, but negotiated the fence indifferently. KaiKohn challenged the leader in the straight, hut Beauty Light, who was an outsider, stalled him off and went on to win by a length and a-half from y n iifnhn. with Kaouau a similar distance back third and Dubious fourth. The favourite gave a disappointing display. DUJCE ABBEY’S LATE RUN, Pot the Spring Plate the scratching [•hen was used freely, 14 acceptors not I being saddled up. Those withdrawn / -were Gaybird, Hoylake, Happy Queen, f Bhnosa, Oratrix, Coupling, Panther, fJBoUx* Sta* God, .Wreath of Myrtle,

Bourse, Insolence, Miss Mercia, Shellmar and Vigilance. Duke Abbey was a very warm favourite from Satrap and Singleton, with Sudden Storm next in demand. Sarchee and Satrap gave trouble at the tapes, and when the field was dispatched Wild Pigeon got the worst of the start. Sarchee led out of the barrier, followed by Teri and Singleton, with Duke Abbey in sixth position. Turning out of the back the order was Sarchee, Latin Quarter, Teri, and Singleton. Sarchee was a length clear at the next stage, with the field bunching up. Coming round the bend into the straight Sarchee was still in front from Latin Quarter, but Duke Abbey there got a run on the false rail, and looked a winner at the distance. He came through to win easily by two lengths from Teri, with whom he fought out the issue, Sarchee fading out of the running. Singleton was third, and Talisker fourth.

THE LINWOOD HANDICAP. A field of 21 horses went out to contest the Linwood Handicap, there being no defections. Fee Simple was the elect of backers from Vigilance, with next best support for Hoylakc and Paper Boy. They got away to a fine start, Amor hitting the front, with Tannadicc and Tembroney following. The rider of Money Peer lost his saddle at tiie start. Coming round the bend for borne Amor still had charge, but Skyguest made a run on the false rail. Bronstell then forged through and looked a winner, but Paper Boy came up fast and challenged, while Vigilance made a late run. They were in a line coming up the straight, but Paper Boy shot out to win in decisive fashion from Rotor, with Bronstell third. Fee Simple was fourth. There was not a length between the first four horses after the winner. THE RACE FOR THE CUP. Three of the acceptors for the New Zealand Gup, Beacon Light, Clarinda and David Garrick were scratched, leaving 14 in the big event. The three top-weights (Count Cavour, Star Stranger and Te Monanui) took their places with the rest of the field. Royal Game looked a picture, while Yoma bore a bit brighter appearance than at Wellington. Te Monanui appeared very well; in fact all trio contestants carried a. fit appearanceRoyal Game looked a bit sore when moving along in his preliminary. Crowds thronged the enciosuro t<Q catch a glimpse of the Gup contestants.

Rapier was best backed, but good support was forthcoming for Piuthair, Star Stranger and Footfall, with Te Monanui next in request. Lady Desmond was fractious at the barrier, while Footfall played up a little. When the tapes lifted Lady Desmond got away well. Royal Game went to the front, while Tc Monanui occupied a handy position. At flic false rail entering the straight the first time Royal Game was pacemaker, accompanied by Bennanee. Passing the stand the field was well strung out, the order of the leaders being Royal Game, Bennanco, Footfall, Te Monanui, Lady Desmond, and Rapier. Turning out of the straight Royal Game still had charge from Bennanee, Footfall, Battlement, Te Monanui, Rapier and Piuthair, with Star Stranger putting in a run to get into fifth place alongside To Monanui. At the mile Royal Game and Bennanco still had charge from Footfall, while Battlement was going well. Rapier Moves Up. Rapier began to move up at the six furlong post, where Royal Game started to drop back and looked a beaten horse. Bennanee took command from Rapier and Piuthair. Crossing the top Rapier joined the leader, while Footfall came again on the rails, and Star Stranger was in the picture. Rapier held on to his advantage and the Riccarton horse passed the post one and a-balf lengths clear of Star Stranger, with Footfall a head away third, and Bennanee, who hung on well, in fourth place. Rapier was always close up, while Footfall made a surprising run over the last bit. Piuthair was never prominent after reaching the straight. Yoma and Equerry were in the rear for the whole of the journey. BACHELOR GAY DESTROYED. CHRISTCHURCH, Saturday. In the Spring Hurdles Handicap at Riccarton, Bachelor Gay broke a fetlock at the hurdle near the flvefurlong post, and was destroyed.
