RACING IN AUSTRALIA.
V.R.C. DERBY ' WON BY TRIVALVE. SILVIUS WINS THE STAKES. (United Press Association.) MELBOURNE, Oct. 30". The Victoria Racing Club's Spring Meeting opened in beautiful weather, and there was an enormous attendance at Flemington. The race track was in capital order. Ninbela was racing third from last when half a mile had been completed in the Maiden Plate, but she made up her ground in good style and won in brilliant fashion. Ninbela is engaged in the V.R.C. Oaks to be run next Thursday.
Mollison, after always being prominent in the contest for the Maribyrnong Plate, won brilliantly. He has now won three times in as many starts. When a foal he was bought for six hundred guineas in Queensland by Mr E. M. Pearce. Mollison has now won £3754 in stakes.
There was a great race in the Melbourne Stakes, Silvius, after being fifth in the early stages, winning narrowly from Amounis. Silvius has scored six wins and one second in his last seven starts. His owner, Sir Sidney Kidman, is at present on a visit to England, Silvius is engaged in the Melbourne Cup.
The Derby.
The seven horses left in at the date of the final forfeit for the V.R C. Derby went to the post. In the early stages of the contest Trivalve was racing in third place, but he ran to the front in the straight and won easily. Trivalve's victory was greeted with enthusiasm. The Derby minncr was bred by his owner, Mr E. E. D. Clarke, who won the Derby at Flemington on two previous occasions, with Wolawa and Furious respectively. R. Lewis, who steered Trivalve to victory, has now ridden the winner of the V.R.C. Derby on seven occasions, winch is the record, in a conversation after yesterday's race, Lewis stated that Trivalve was inclined to loaf after he took command, but with a slight touch of the spurs he came away again and won well. Trivalve is engaged in the Melbourne Cup. The value of the first prize in the Derby amounted to £4436.
Vaals, who is owned and trained in Sydney, was always well placed in the Cantala Stakes, and won in good style under a 101 b penalty. Vaals won the Epsom Handicap at Randwick. Amounis captured the same double last year. The stake won by Vaals to-day amounted to £2385.
There was a great finish in Hotham Handicap. Bicolour finished strongly and he made a dead heat of it in the last stride with the New Zealand-bred horse Eridanus. The dcad-hcaters are engaged in the Melbourne Cup. The time for the Hotham Handicap (2.32£) is equal to the race record. The following were the results of the various events:—
