EPISODE AT NANKING.

CHINESE SOLDIER INJURED

DEMAND FOR COMPENSATION.

A threat of trouble hangs over Nanking as the result of the incident involving Mr Mac Alister, a Queenslander, who recently started out, but abandoned his search for the missing Times' correspondent, Mr Riley. Mac Alister was sojourning in Nanking and acting as honorary correspondent for the local paper. He was travelling in an automobile with nflr Tweedy, another British resident, in the British concession, when they ran over and injured a Chinese soldier. Messrs Mac Alister and Tweedy were arrested and 2600 dollars demanded as compensation for.the soldier. The car, which is the property of the French Postal Commissioner, was seized. Mr Mac Alister has referred the matter to the British Consul for settlement., He was told it was impossible to wait, and unless the amount was paid In three days the Chinese military commander would refuse to accept responsibility for the behaviour of the troops. The British senior naval officer of the Yangtse flotilla Is investigating the incident.
