IODISED SALT.
USE IN HOSPITAL. AUTHORISED BY BOARD. EXAMPLE- FOR THE PUBLIC. (Special to Times.) CHRISTCHURCH, Friday. On the recommendation of the Hospital Committee the North Canterbury Hospital Board authorised the use of iodised salt in all the board’s institutions. The committee reported that the cost was very little more than plain salt, and it was hoped that this example would influence the public to bring iodised salt into general use. This course was strongly recommended by the Department of Health and the British Medical Association, particularly in districts where goitre was prevalent. Dr. 11. T. D. Acland stated that the views of the British Medical Association in regard to the use of iodised salt had been published in the newspapers on Tuesday, lie thought it was very advisable that the board should set an example by using it, not only at the meal tables, but also in all -forms of cooking, and particularly in bread baking. The Health Department and the medical profession were strongly in favour of its use. Unfortunately it had not yet been made compulsory to use it. The board had a splendid opportunity of testing ils efficacy. The report was adopted.
