“THE KINKAJOU.”

TO REPLACE THE CHARLSTOPJ. While the love of jazz music and dancing lias not. lessened in the United Stales Hie vogue of the more involved dances such as the Charleston and Black Bottom is waning. II was never possible, with any degree of success, for two persons lo dance either the Charleston or the Black Bottom together. Their intricacies simply afforded an opportunity for the display of agility that fitted the stage heller than the ball-room. At the very outset the vogue of these dances received a serious setback when dancing floors collapsed as partners attempted to execute steps in unison.

Now a serious effort is being made to popularise the ‘‘Kinkajou’ —a dance that lias received endorsement of tlic recent Convention of Dancing Masters in New York. Bad For the Floor. It is neither so disjointed in music nor in its steps as the dances which wore so popular a year ago. “Kinkajou” starts with a “strut” —a modification of a jazz walk or swaying glide with a lifting of the shoulders. Its second movement is a grinding of the heel with the leg stretched forward and the toe swinging to right and left with the heel as a pivot. This is easier to the dancer than llie Charleston, even if more destrucdive to a polished dancing floor. While “Kinkajou” contests promise to replace the Charleston and Black Bottom competitions it is doubtfuld whether tlic new/lance will become any more popular than its predecessors.
