CONGESTION AT THEATRE
MATTER OF FIRE ESCAPES
DISCUSSION AT TE AROHA.
It was argued by the Mayor, Mr R. Coulter, at Te Aroha on Wednesday, that there was a doubt about the sufficiency of fire-escapes in the local theatre. He pointed out that at a recent entertainment people were sitting and standing on the stairways. Had a stampede occurred the results would have been disastrous. He moved that the building .inspector report on the matter.
Cr. Carroll: Why were these subjects not put on the order paper? The Mayor said they had only lately been brought under his notice. It is the duty of the Mayor ■or any councillor to exert himself where life is endangered, and he was the best judge as to his duties.
Cr. Carroll asked if the inspector had spoken about the congestion. Mr Pilkington, building inspector, stated that he was present on the occasion referred to by the Mayor. Everything was all right. There was no congestion, and arrangements were very satisfactory. The Mayor: Well, I was told different.
The motion was lost, the Mayor remarking, "Well, I'm satisfied I've done my duty by bringing the matter forward."
