BOOKMAKER'S CLERK FINED. AUCKLAND. Wednesday. Pynson Longdiil, who had previously pleaded guilty to a charge of having carried on the business of a bookmaker, appeared at the Police Court this morning for sentence. He laid the winning double at a Christchurch race meeting, and although this was acknowledged by his principal, the money was never paid out. Longdill's principal had disappeared and was still being sought. Longdiil only had the job a few days.
"He knew what he was taking on," said Mr F. K. Hunt in imposing a fine of £5.
PUBLSCAN FINED £2O. WELLINGTON, Thursday. Michael Burke, aged 28, licensee of the City Hotel, was to-day fined £2O for using the premises as a common gaming house. It was stated for defendant that he received only £8 per week as manager of the hotel, and foolishly tried to supplement by taking bets. He only acted as an agent. The amounts were small, and he was losing his license. He had agreed to the transfer. The Magistrate, in imposing the fine, said defendant must have known the risk he was running.
