U.S.A. COAL STRIKE.
RESUMPTION IN ILLINOIS. COMPLETE SETTLEMENT LIKELY, (Australian and N.Z. Cable Assn.) (Received Oct. 4, 10.15 a.m.) NEW YORK, Oct. 3. Coal operators and miners alike believe that the strike settlement which is effective throughout Illinois is likely to influence a settlement in other centres. Some 72,000 men have already returned to work in New York and Illinois, but the situation in Indiana, Ohio, lowa, and Missouri is not affected.
The general strike of the union coalminers, which commenced in April last over a question of wages, caused a cessation of activity in the bituminous coal industry. Over 150,000 men struck in the soft coal regions. The mines affected were in the central fields of Western Pennsylvania, in Ohio, Indiana and Illinois, and the outlying districts of lowa. Missouri, Kansas. Oklahoma and Arkansas. Fully 200 fl shaft and strip mines were thrown idle, but the maintenance men remained at work, under an agreement made between the operators and the union officials t<> protect the property against damage during the strike.
